Historic Bluefields Continues To Fight Proposed Cell Tower

As of today June 2nd 2014, we have 349 signatures!
(244 electronic and 105 paper petitions)

For all those who have signed, we Thank You - and if you haven't signed up yet please sign up here

Our discussions with State Representative Darren Jernigan and Mr. Don Majors of Congressman Cooper's office Wednesday May 21st went well. We have their support and Congressman Cooper personally presented the information shared at the meeting to Parallel Industries and The Nashville/ Eastern Railway on Friday May 23rd and again on Friday May 30th. We hope to hear this week of the recommended next steps we should pursue.

With the help of Nancy Donovan of Bluefield Ave we are excited to announce that the Tennessee Historical Commission has determined that Bluefields is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

"This determination offers the same protection as if the district were listed in the National Register. Joe Garrison in our office handles the Section 106 process, and once he receives the form he will make a determination as to whether the cell tower will be visible and if it will negatively impact the neighborhood or not. If it is determined that the tower will have an adverse effect on the neighborhood, efforts to mitigate the tower will be undertaken. I did want to be clear that these mitigations do not mean the tower will not be built, however."

Here are additional areas we continue to work on as we raise awareness of this issue in our community:

  • Megan Deardorf of Cumberland Circle has composed our official press release which can be read here.
  • Maggie Sidelinger of Cumberland Circle is assisting with soliciting support from our Hip D folks and other local community support.
  • Amy Smith of Cumberland Circle composed a letter to the leaders of all relevant State Agencies, Congressman Coopers Office and all organizations directly linked to this project requesting all documents related to the Nashville Star Railway. In addition she requested an Impact Study, Summary of all entities approved and or interested in the cell tower as well as the Federal Mandate if any for PTC (Positive Train Control).

Our ladies of the neighborhood deserve a round of applause as they have really stepped up and we so appreciate your support!

We are also reaching out to business owners along Donelson Pike including reaching out to the Donelson/Hermitage Chamber to ensure they are fully aware of the plans for this cell tower and the ramifications it will have on the community of Donelson. Keith LaSuer has been doing a great job on Donelson Pike getting local business to display yard signs. If you have a business in the Donelson Village area in particular and would like a yard sign please let us know.

We have reached out to the Mayor's office and Peter and myself had a site visit from Courtney Wheeler the Mayor's Community Neighborhood Liaison on Friday May 30th. We are however still awaiting an official response. (Discussions with other members of his advisory board have taken place as well.)

We have gotten the first batch of signs and are anxious to make a second order by Friday June 6th! You can now go on line to:

The cost of the signs is quite expensive but it is making a difference in raising awareness to our cause so please help support us by donating and showing your Bluefields commitment. It will take a team of volunteers and financial support to keep the pressure on our representatives. As we all know the louder we are the bigger the impact we make.

Joe and Peter were interviewed by Channel 5 News on Wednesday, May 21st you can check out the coverage on the link to our page - http://historicbluefields.com/about-bluefields/cell-tower-media-coverage

We would like to have a print story published from one of the following papers. The Tennessean, Nashville Business Journal, Nashville Scene, Nashville Community Ledger or the Lebanon Democrat and are currently submitting the press release composed to each organization.

We are also working hard organizing our upcoming Historic Bluefields Annual Picnic to take place June 14th 4-7pm. You should have received a flyer in your mailbox last week. We have invited local dignitaries that are working hard to assist us .

This is not only going to be a great opportunity to show off the beautiful green space area where the proposed cell tower will be but a wonderful time to show our guests a great community and extend a warm Bluefields Welcome!
